How did you become interested in your craft/artwork style?
After college, while working in Quito, Ecuador, I discovered my passion for jewelry making, thanks to my boss, who was an avid hobbyist in this craft. When I asked him to teach me and he refused, I saw it as a challenge and took it upon myself to learn. I dove into books on jewelry making, and wire wrapping quickly became my first love. However, I soon realized that my creativity demanded more, so I transitioned into silversmithing. This journey has been incredibly rewarding and continues to push my artistic boundaries every day.
Are you self taught or did you take classes?
I’m mostly self-taught, and whenever I come across something I don’t know how to do, I dive in and find a way to figure it out! About ten years ago, I had the wonderful opportunity to take a week-long class in Mexico. It was such a fun experience that opened my eyes to different perspectives on making handmade jewelry!
Do you work in multiple mediums? What is your favorite? My hands can't stay still for long. I LOVE creating jewelry, but when I’m out and about with the kids, I bring along anything that keeps me busy. My latest discovery, needle felting, has become my favorite so far!
How long have you been working in your craft?
I established my business, Stone Disegno, in 2010. But I have been making jewelry of some sort since 2005.
What inspires you to create?
Stones!, I love the amazing variety out there, each one is just unique and makes me just dream of what it could become. I have always been creative, from one way or another.
Do you create every day?
I do!- Some days, I love to take a little time to sketch out my designs, and on those days when I have more free time, I head over to my studio to bring those sketches to life! But when I can't dive into jewelry-making, I enjoy playing around with needle felting and creating adorable little creatures or doing some fun paintings. It keeps my creativity flowing!
What is your favorite thing to create?
Jewelry is definitely my passion. There are times when I create nothing but crazy earrings; other times, I'm obsessed with statement rings. If the stone is bold enough, I’ll also choose spectacular necklaces.
What is your favorite part of creating?
It's pretty cool what you can create with just stones and metal. It's wild how much you can do with these materials when you throw in a bit of creativity. Seriously, the possibilities are endless!
When is your favorite time of day to create?
I really enjoy my productive time at night when everyone has settled down for the evening. It’s the perfect chance for me to switch off my homeschool-mom mode and focus on other more creative things!
What motivates you to create?
The satisfaction to see my customers happy about a piece I made. There's also an intrinsic NEED inside me to keep creating!
Does art help you in other areas of your life?
Yes!, it is my escape to a happier place when I'm not feeling good, also, it is my way to chanel emotions and everyday happenings.
How has your style changed over time?
My style is always changing. The materials, the techniques and the mood has a lot to do with those changes as they open creative ways to chanel my designs. My style is always evolving.
How do you stay inspired and motivated to create new art?
Once or twice during my journey I have thought about quiting jewelry making, but after 5 minutes, I come back to my senses and I just know I can't do that to myself!- This is my life and my way to expressing all who I am. I LOVE it and it shows on every piece I make. My utmost motivation is simply the love to create itself - it is my way to a fullfilled and balanced life.
