Furills by Kathyanna

How did you become interested in your craft/artwork style?

My grandmother and mother were great seamstresses. My first experience following their footstep was fashioning outfits for my baby dolls. I continued to dream up all kinds of outfits in my head. Finally, my mother allowed me to sew on a machine. I would later learn to change dress patterns to sew outfits that I had envisioned, then I would wear them to school. Yes there were many flops and it’s hard to believe that my mother allowed me to leave the house in my one-of-a-king setup. It just made me try harder. As an adult I attended fashion school where I learned techniques in textiles, designs, pattern making, draping and merchandising.  It’s been 55 years of following my passion for fashion.

Do you work in multiple mediums?

I love working with woven fabrics and fur. Having the soft feel of fur next to your skin is comforting, and I love how it makes people look striking. It’s sultry, hard to stop gazing at a person wearing fur. Using synthetic fur is better for creating and future care of the garment. I also use saddle blankets, feathers, leather and woven blankets.

Do you create every day?

I try to sew every day. Making my coats, wraps, ponchos and pillows gives me purpose. Anytime I can design with texture and color I’m in my happy place. Listening to podcast or inspirational music while working my craft is a good day. It’s like the phrase “you can find God in doing the dishes”.  Motto I live by.

What inspires you to create?

I’m inspired by anything that is visually pleasing to the eye rather it be fashion, interior design, architecture, antiques, nature or people. Honestly, I’m looking for inspiration in what others wear. There are so many creative people in the world.

What motivates you to create?

I love being a part of the Gallery n Gifts family. It is motivating to be in a group of achievers with common goals, working towards the betterment of community. Meeting others with similar hobbies, and seeing someone looking fabulous in one of my creations, keeps me motivated.

How do you stay inspired and motivated to create new art?

My craft has evolved through the years. I’m always curious about what comes next. I hope my new creations will inspire and motivate others to follow their dreams.
